Tianjin Vocational Institute was first established as Second Sub-College of Nankai University in 1978, and then became the Chemical College of Tianjin University. Under the approval of Tianjin Municipal Government by the end of 1982, the Chemical College of Tianjin University transformed into Tianjin Vocational Institute. Tianjin Vocational Institute is the first one among those ordinary higher education institutions in Tianjin which implement higher vocational education. Also it’s among the 17 universities and colleges in China which received World Bank loan. In 2002, Tianjin Vocational Institute is approved by Ministry of Education of China as a national model vocational college.

The college builds up 27 advanced laboratories and cooperatively set up more than 40 on and off campus workshops with the communities and industries. Tianjin National Vocational Capability Appraisal Center has distributes its 28th Appraisal Office to Tianjin Vocational Institute.
